Do you suffer from dry hair? You are certainly not alone. Dry hair feels rough, looks dull, and is difficult to style. But how do you know for sure if your hair is truly dry?
Characteristics of dry hair
Are you unsure if you have dry hair? These are the signs:
-
You have split ends
-
Your hair breaks easily
-
Your hair tangles easily
-
Your locks feel stiff or rough
-
Your hair lacks shine and looks lifeless
If you recognize several of these characteristics, it's likely that you have dry hair.
What causes dry hair?
Dry hair is usually caused by one of these two reasons:
1. Low sebum production
A dry scalp often means low sebum production. Sebum is the natural oil your scalp produces that protects your hair. Factors such as hormonal changes (pregnancy, menopause), medication, washing too often, or a lack of nutrients – especially vitamin A – can lead to a dry scalp and dry hair.
2. Over-stressed and dehydrated hair
Have you often dyed, bleached, or had a perm treatment? Or do you regularly use heat tools like a straightener or blow dryer? Then your hair can get damaged. The hair cuticles remain open, causing moisture to escape faster and your hair to dry out.

Tips & advice: how to care for dry hair
Make sure you get enough vitamin A to maintain your sebum production. Vitamin A can be found in carrots, oranges, cauliflower, dairy, meat, and fish, among others. You can, of course, also choose to take a vitamin A supplement.
Wash your hair a maximum of 2 to 3 times a week. Washing removes sebum from your scalp.
Always rinse your hair after swimming in seawater or pool water. It is also advisable to rinse your hair before swimming. This way, your hair cuticles will have already absorbed water without excessive chlorine or salt.
Use hair care products specifically for dry or damaged hair. We recommend the following products: a moisturizing shampoo such as Argan Oil Shampoo or the Neutrea Plus shampoo, a richly nourishing Conditioner/Hair Restorer and an ultimate care mask.
Leave chemical treatments, such as dyeing or perming, to the professional. He or she knows exactly what your hair can and cannot handle and will use the right products. There are even special products today that provide extra protection for your hair during chemical treatments.
Be careful with heat! This applies to both the heat from the shower and from styling tools. Do you still want to use a blow dryer, straightener, or curling iron? Always do this in combination with a heat protection product.
Unfortunately, caring for dry hair takes time. Your hair will not be restored overnight. Do you want to quickly make your dry hair shine? Then use an oil. This will make your hair smooth and shiny in no time.
But be careful, this is not a long-term solution. For that, continue to eat healthy, don't wash too often, and be careful with heat!
