Hairdresser products are expensive, that's what many people think. If you only look at the price, it's true that they are often higher than at the drugstore or supermarket. Especially if you're always looking for deals. But is that cheaper shampoo really cheaper? And is price the only important factor when choosing your shampoo or styling product? We've listed the differences for you.
Quality of ingredients
A good shampoo not only cleanses the hair but also nourishes it. Thanks to high-quality ingredients, such as sustainably grown oil, olive serum, ginger extracts, or vitamins and proteins, the shampoo effectively targets dry hair, damaged hair, dandruff, or whatever it's designed for. These quality ingredients are often rarer and therefore often more expensive.
In addition to carefully selected good ingredients, professional shampoos contain as few or no potentially harmful substances as possible. For example, Calmare shampoos contain no parabens.
Silicones
Hairdresser shampoos often contain little to no (non-soluble) silicones. Many cheaper shampoos and other styling products are packed with this ingredient. Non-soluble silicones make your hair look shiny and thick, but appearances can be deceiving. These silicones coat your hair and completely seal it off. This causes your hair to dry out, so it receives almost no nourishment.

Non-soluble silicones are not easily rinsed out, as they do not dissolve in water. These silicones also prevent salon treatments, such as coloring, from taking as well, because the color cannot penetrate the hair. There are also washable silicones, but these substances are much more expensive to purchase and are rarely found in cheaper shampoos.
In the image below, you can see that the silicones sometimes literally have to be scraped from the hair.

Research and innovation
Professional hair care brands invest heavily in research and innovation. They continuously improve their formulas based on the latest scientific insights and trends. This includes, for example, the use of new technologies or ingredients, such as keratin or bond-building technology, as in Keraphlex.
Different concentration
Products from and for hairdressers contain a higher concentration of conditioning ingredients. This means you really need to use less of a salon product. Often, for example, you only need an amount the size of a euro coin of a professional shampoo to wash your hair properly, while you often need much more of a drugstore shampoo. The bottom of that shampoo bottle or that of a pot of gel from the supermarket will therefore be reached much faster.
This difference in the amount of conditioning ingredients also immediately explains the price difference, because those conditioning ingredients are the most expensive in the products. BUT... since you use much less product, a salon product is ultimately not more expensive.
Tailored advice and goodwill!
A hairdresser knows your hair better than anyone. They recommend products that perfectly match your hair quality and styling needs. You often don't get this customized advice in a drugstore. And let's be honest, you'd want to grant your hairdresser that extra income, wouldn't you?
So, many reasons have been listed! That's why our motto is:
'Buy your products from the hairdresser more often'!
You'll notice that it does your hair good and that you don't have to spend more at all!
