Permanent is terug van weggeweest!

Perms are back!

Perms are back!

Curls are hot! For a few years now, we've been seeing more and more curls in hair fashion. And if you're not blessed with curly locks yourself, a beautiful perm can offer a solution. In the 80s, perms were very popular, but they have been around for much longer than that. This is why perms have an old and dusty image and are associated with older ladies. That's a shame, because with a perm you can create a completely different and really trendy look!

With perms, you can now create many different styles. Whether someone wants a wavy, a tighter, more defined, or just a perm that gives a bit of body and texture, it's all possible. There's always a style that fits.

The curl trend has blown over from America. After many years, sleek hair is on its way out. More body, playful curls, or a beautiful wave in the hair are now totally hot. Want to get started in your salon too? Maybe you can get some nice tips and facts from this blog. After all, you probably don't perm (anymore) every day!

A quick refresher

Whether hair is straight or curly is determined by chemical bonds in the hair: hydrogen, sodium, and sulfur bonds. Sodium and hydrogen bonds can be easily broken by using a heat tool. However, this only has a temporary effect. The sulfur bonds are much stronger and can only be broken by means of a perming treatment.

Perming solutions contain ammonium thioglycolate. This substance causes the hair cuticles to open, allowing the perming solution to penetrate deep into the hair and break the sulfur bonds. By applying a neutralizing solution with hydrogen peroxide, new sulfur bonds are formed, which ensure that the hair remains curled.

How long does a perm last?

How long your perm lasts depends on the length and condition of the hair. In addition, the tighter the curl, the longer the perm will last.

Why perm?

A perm certainly has its advantages. It gives you the full head of curls you've been dreaming of for years. The hair gets a lot of volume and firmness, ideal for people with thinner or limp hair. In addition, the hair is easier to style and maintain; it defies wind and weather!

Different types of perms

In the past, there was little to no choice in perm styles. Small rollers, tightly wound, a stiffly permed hairstyle was the result. Nowadays, there are many more possibilities due to different processes. Soft waves or defined firm curls and everything in between, it's all possible. The biggest and most important difference between modern perms and the classic perms of the past is the technique. Modern perms are all about customization, the way of winding, the rollers, and the liquid used.

Choose the right perm rod

The rod you choose determines the shape of your curl. With a cylindrical rod you get a nice even curl, the diabolic rod gives a stronger curl at the ends, shapers can be used well for a coarse curl with a playful effect, and with spiral rods you make, as the name suggests, spiral curls. With the winding technique, you then determine how the hair falls. The well-known techniques are the fan technique, 9-section technique, or brick-laid. A fun and quick way to apply is the 6-rod technique. Here you use 6 large shapers and create a nonchalant look.

Choose the right perming solutions

There are 2 types of liquid, one that gives a long-lasting result and one that provides more temporary support and volume. The customer's wishes and the condition and characteristics of the hair determine which liquid is most suitable for that hair. At Calmare, you can choose from 4 liquids:
- Neutral Lotion F/0 for coarse and unruly hair
- Neutral Lotion N/1 for normal hair
- Neutral Lotion P/2 for fine, porous and colored hair
- Volume Lotion, for support and volume, suitable for all hair types

The Neutral and Volume Lotions each have their own fixing solution.

Aqua Flush, exclusive to Calmare

Unique to Calmare is, of course, the Aqua Flush! That makes your perm treatment a lot easier and eliminates the need for rinsing!! Want to know more about it? Then read the blog Flush it! and watch the accompanying mini-tutorial.

Last but absolutely not least!

Unfortunately, there are also disadvantages to perms. After a perm treatment, the original sulfur bonds are not 100% restored. The hair is fragile and somewhat less healthy; the hair cuticles may be somewhat damaged by the perming solution. The somewhat porous hair splits and breaks more easily. The use of Keraphlex during the perm treatment prevents this damage to the hair. A valuable addition, therefore!

Always recommend good aftercare

However, it is always important to recommend good aftercare. A nourishing shampoo, an oil, a hair mask, or a leave-in conditioner are not superfluous luxuries! For example, choose Calmare

Argan oil Shampoo,

Argan Oil Treatment

Hair Restorer or Leave-in Keratin.
